Bobby

The Thursday Murder Club

Bobby is an old friend of Jason Ritchie whose renewed relationship with him becomes part of the investigation into Tony Curran’s murder. Jason describes Bobby as someone he trusts and as a companion with whom he feels both have changed for the better; together, they seek confirmation that Gianni Gunduz had returned shortly before Tony’s death.

Friendship with Jason

After they had left Coopers Chase, Jason and Bobby met for a reunion drink at Le Pont Noir. Jason remembers the encounter as a sign that their trust had survived the years and that both men seemed to have changed for the better. Bobby did not explain what he did for a living, but Jason observed that he seemed happy. His reserve leaves his present circumstances indistinct while underscoring the renewed ease between the two friends.

Part in Establishing Gianni’s Return

The renewed friendship mattered because Jason and Bobby still could not rule out that one of them had killed Tony, or that Gianni was alive and seeking revenge. Jason recounts contacting a mutual acquaintance whom both men trusted and whom Gianni would also have trusted. Jason and Bobby asked this person directly whether Gianni had visited. The acquaintance confirmed that Gianni had arrived three days before Tony was murdered and left on the day of the killing. Gianni had said that he blamed Tony for informing on him years earlier, though Jason remains wary of taking Gianni’s stated explanation at face value.

Secrecy and Narrative Role

Bobby’s reluctance to discuss his present occupation is presented alongside Jason’s approval of his happiness, rather than as a new mystery the account resolves. His importance here lies in the trust he shares with Jason and in their joint approach to a source who can establish Gianni’s movements. Jason says that he and Bobby trust this person with their lives and promises to identify him to the police if they cannot work it out themselves. Bobby therefore helps connect old loyalties to the present murder inquiry, while the limits of what Jason reveals about him keep Bobby’s wider life private.
